Dorothy McGuire in 1952

I have been an admirer of Dorothy McGuire's for many years. The first movie I remember seeing that starred her was the excellent A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It remains a personal favorite. I got a bad case of the "frights" as a child watching her as the mute servant in The Spiral Staircase. Portions of that film can still make me jump!

I find it admirable that, although quite lovely, she disdained cheesecake poses, refused to wear makeup for her role as a homely woman in The Enchanted Cottage and turned down attempts to publicize her private life. She was always a star and never a starlet. Dorothy McGuire passed away from heart failure September 13, 2001.
